Founded by Annette Innes in 1989, Hahndorf Physiotherapy is located in the historic village of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills.  Michelle Bessen has taken over ownership of the practice in July 2015 and is continuing the caring and quality services of physiotherapy, Pilates, women’s health, hydrotherapy and a range of exercises classes.

Meet Our Team

Michelle Bessen
Michelle BessenPractice owner; Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Masters Musculo-skeletal Physiotherapy.

Michelle graduated from Uni SA in 1993.  She has worked in outpatients and private practice in SA, Victoria and the UK, previously being the joint owner of a physiotherapy practice at Modbury for 10 years.  She completed her Masters in Physiotherapy (Musculo-Skeletal) in 2004 and has post graduate study in many areas including Dry Needling, Muscle Energy, Strain Counter-Strain, Pilates and Women’s Health.

Michelle became the owner of Hahndorf Physiotherapy in July 2015 and is very happy to be working with a great group of physios and staff along with the previous owner Annette Innes.

Michelle lives locally and has two young children. She loves cycling, jogging, keeping fit, camping and being outdoors.

Karen Dutton
Karen DuttonBachelor of Physiotherapy, Grad Dip Rehabilitation
Karen hails from Waikerie where she had her own successful private practice for 15 years. She graduated from SAIT in 1981, and has had over 30 years experience in both public and private sectors in South Australia and Queensland.

Karen has special interests in treating sports injuries, general musculoskeletal conditions, orthopaedic rehabilitation as well as designing falls prevention and balance programs. Karen also has a keen interest in Women’s Health. She has a Grad Dip in Clinical Rehab through Flinders Uni and Stroke Rehabilitation is another one of Karen’s long time passions.

Karen has 3 grown up children and enjoys being able to spend time with them along with doing some yoga, walking and hiking, card making and attempting to learn to play the violin.
Karen is available Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursday (afternoons) and Fridays for appointments, ring 83881277 to make a booking.

Kirsten Atwell
Kirsten AtwellBachelor of Physiotherapy

Since graduating in 1992, Kirsten has worked in hospital and private practice settings in SA, Victoria, NSW and across the UK.  She also successfully ran her own private practice in Prospect for 8 years before starting a family.

Over the years Kirsten has added many treatment techniques to her Physio “toolbag” and is driven by a desire to offer a thorough, caring, wholistic treatment to her patients.  She utilizes a variety of mobilization techniques, massage and acupuncture and believes strongly in the empowering benefits of understanding your own injury, exercise and Pilates.

Kirsten practices a Japanese style of acupuncture which is gentle and easier for those who have not experienced acupuncture before.  Acupuncture can be an effective treatment choice for anything from a simple sprain through to complex problems where multiple injuries or other health problems are involved.

Kirsten consults on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Angela PfitznerBachelor of Physiotherapy, Graduate Certificate in Physiotherapy

Angela trained as a physiotherapist in South Australia and has more than 25 years experience in diverse areas of physiotherapy practice.

She is currently undertaking the process of becoming a titled Continence and Women’s Health Physiotherapist of the Australian Physiotherapy Association. She is skilled in helping men and women with continence issues and pelvic pain. She can help women with prolapse management including the use of pessaries. She can assist pregnant and post natal women to manage the physical challenges of the child-bearing year.

Angela has undertaken advanced manual therapy training in the technique of Counterstrain with the Jones Institute.   Counterstain is a gentle and powerfully effective manual therapy that helps people to heal from pain and dysfunction.

Angela has 2 teenage children and enjoys keeping fit by going to the gym and walking.

Angela consults on Mondays and Tuesdays at Hahndorf.


Sangeeta Sharda
Sangeeta ShardaBachelor of Physiotherapy.

Sangeeta graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from India. She moved to Singapore to gain experience in different faculties of physiotherapy in the hospital environment.  Sangeeta has been living in Australia since 2013 and has worked as a physiotherapist in private practice and aged care.  She completed a Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in 2011 from the University of South Australia.

Her work involves both traditional ‘hands on’ techniques and active exercise based management of musculoskeletal conditions. She has further interests in Pilates and Women’s Health physiotherapy and continues to deepen her knowledge and skills in this area.

Sangeeta is a new mum and loves spending time with her beautiful daughter and loving husband. She plays social badminton with her mates on the weekends, loves to explore new cafes of Adelaide and enjoys cooking different cuisines.

Sangeeta consults on Monday mornings and Wednesdays.

Natalie Trim
Natalie TrimBachelor of Physiotherapy.

Natalie graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from University of South Australia in 2015, and has since been working in government adult disability services. She also has qualifications and many years’ experience in massage and remedial therapies, and is excited to now extend her skills into a private practice setting.

Natalie is passionate about empowering people to reach their best health through education, movement rehabilitation and guiding recovery from pain and injury. She is really looking forward to extending her practice to include Pilates and Women’s Health.

Natalie is a Hills local and enjoys Pilates and yoga, art, spending time with family and friends, and being outdoors as much as possible with her husband and gorgeous Aussie Shepherd.

Natalie is available for appointments Monday afternoons and Fridays, ring 8388 1277 to make a booking.

Kimberley Gilmour
Kimberley GilmourBachelor of Physiotherapy.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia in 2006 Kimberly has worked extensively in private practice physiotherapy. She has further qualifications in Pilates and experience in teaching Pilates in class settings and on a one on one basis. Her interests include general musculoskeletal physiotherapy, treatment of sports related injuries, Pilates , Hydrotherapy and injury prevention education. In her spare time she enjoys keeping fit, the outdoors and spending time with family and friends.

Kimberley is currently on Maternity Leave.

Nikki Lynch
Nikki LynchBachelor of Physiotherapy

Graduating from the University of South Australia in 2013, Nikki is excited to apply her clinical skills in a private practice setting. Her interests include general musculoskeletal physiotherapy, orthopaedic rehabilitation, Pilates and hydrotherapy.  Nikki has qualifications in Pilates Matwork  and enjoys guiding Pilates classes and one on one assessment and exercise sessions.

Nikki enjoys time with family, friends and being outdoors, especially at the beach.

Nikki is currently on Maternity Leave.

Annette Innes
Annette InnesWomen's Health physiotherapist.
Annette’s interest in Women’s Health began early, highlights being her first Pelvic Floor Course conducted by Dr Pauline Chiarelli in 1983, University of South Australia Graduate Certificate in Women’s Health (1994), and being awarded the Australian Physiotherapist Association Continence and Women’s Health Physiotherapist (2011).

She has supported her professional association at a state and national level on committees (including a term as APA SA Branch President) for more than 20 years.

Annette has recently retired in January 2018.  She is continuing in a mentoring role to current physiotherapists.

Sue Paech
Sue PaechPractice Manager

Sue has worked at Hahndorf Physiotherapy since 1991, and became the Practice Manager in 1998.

Sue is well known and respected by our clients, having previously worked with the local GP practice at Hahndorf, Mt Barker & Nairne.

Sue is married with two adult sons, & five grandchildren.

Her passions are grandchildren, Football (Port Power) reading, walking & visiting Bali.

Sue has lived in the Hills most of her life, and appreciates the needs of the local people.

Julianne Kaesler
Julianne KaeslerReceptionist

Julianne has worked for the practice since 2006.

Over the previous ten years, Julianne ran the office of Kaesler Bros P/L, & prior to that was a stay at home mother, after nine years as a bank teller for Westpac.

Julianne is married with two adult children, three grandchildren, and has lived in Hahndorf since getting married. Julianne describes herself as a community leader.

Julianne’s interests are her family, sport: AFL, she coaches netball, walking and cycling.

Linda White
Linda WhiteReceptionist

Linda is the newest member of our admin staff and loves being part of a great team.

Since completing Secondary School Linda has worked in the medical field in many capacities, as an admin officer at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, receptionist at the Mount Barker Hospital and as a medical receptionist at Dr Jones and Partners.

Linda is well known and respected by her fellow colleagues and patients through her professionalism and her compassionate nature.

Outside of work, Linda enjoys spending time with her family, holidaying and exploring new wineries with friends, on our amazing doorstep here in the Adelaide Hills.

Tori Kaesler
Tori KaeslerReceptionist

After firstly working at Hahndorf Physio from 2005-2006 Tori returned and now works a few mornings in reception while also studying at Flinders University and running her own Personal Training and Group Fitness business.

Tori’s other interests include playing, coaching and being part of the committee for the Hahndorf Netball Club and anything to help her retain her fitness whether it be gym work, swimming, running or cycling.
